AmPark Owl Blog

Owl Blog Post February 5th, 2021

2/5/2021

Dear AmPark Families,

Thank you to our guest readers that ensured our Annual National African American Read-In could continue virtually this year: Beverley Santos, Valarie Hunsinger, Anna Goldman, Elora Ibarra, Shelley Monroe-Huang, Persia Stevens, and Chef Marion!

It was wonderful to see so many AmPark Owls join us for No One Eats Alone Day as the kick-off to the NYCDOE’s Respect for All week!  We will have monthly school-wide lunches moving forward.

In-person Attendance: Space planning for in-person numbers continues throughout the year.    The DOE is requiring school outreach to the family of all children who have no or low (less than 5 days) in-person attendance since December to determine learning preference status (remote or hybrid).  Many of our families that have been in this circumstance have been keeping the school informed and this outreach is much appreciated.
Reminders
  • The Middle School Application deadline is February 9th.
  • The Fall 2020 Learning Experience Survey closes today:  https://surveys.panoramaed.com/nycdoe/Bronx%20Family/surveys?language=en
  • Please sign up for your child’s New York City Student Account (NYCSA) as soon as possible if you have not done so already.  This account allows you to easily view your child’s report cards, receive important updates from the NYCDOE, submit consents, and track attendance.  Over 70% of our families have enrolled and our district goal is 100%.
  • Link to Practice Makes Perfect Online Tutoring Sign-Up - Reminder you must sign up each week for a session.  The sessions do not automatically reoccur.

Pre-K
This year’s pre-K applications will open on Wednesday, February 24.  NYC families with children born in 2018 will be able to apply to 3-K, and children born in 2017 can apply to pre-K.

Vaccinations
On Friday, Yankee Stadium will open as a vaccination site for Bronx Residents. If anyone is interested, please go to the website : https://www.somosvaccinations.com/.

From Ina

Hello AmPark Families - As you may have already heard through your email, we are very excited to bring the SQUARE 1 ART fundraiser to AmPark this spring!!! It will be 100% VIRTUAL this year!
I am not doing grade wide lessons this year specifically for Square 1. Instead, you will have the option to: SELECT ANY ONE OF YOUR CHILDS ARTWORKS FROM THIS YEAR OR HAVE YOUR CHILD CREATE A NEW ORIGINAL ARTWORK TO SUBMIT. You could even create an artwork as a family to mark this most unusual year. I understand that these are stressful times so YOU ONLY HAVE TO SUBMIT ARTWORK IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO ORDER KEEPSAKES. I hope you can take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to celebrate your child's creativity AND support the AmPark Community.
Best to all, Ina

This spring break, (re)discover STEM with STEM Matters NYC! Kindergarten through grade 12 students can apply now to attend programs with STEM Matters NYC. K-8 students can apply for Discovery Day, a day-long hands-on learning experience, and enjoy a special interactive class with their adult caregiver. High school students can apply for internships at the NYC Department of Education’s Genovesi Environmental Study Center and spend a week getting their hands dirty in the garden or caring for animals. A wide range of programs are offered at sites throughout the city, including three in the Bronx!
Choose from the NYC Department of Education’s Genovesi Environmental Study Center; Audubon New York; Bronx Zoo; Central Park Zoo; Green-Wood Cemetery; GrowNYC Teaching Garden at Governors Island; Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum; Makerspace NYC; New York Aquarium; New York Botanical Garden; Prospect Park Zoo; Queens Botanical Garden; Queens County Farm Museum; Queens Zoo; Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden; Solar One; Staten Island Museum; Staten Island Zoo; and Wave Hill. Students will meet and work with field experts in programs that feature real-world learning experiences.
Don’t miss out, spots are limited and the application deadline is Wednesday, February 10. Preference is given to students who attend Title I schools. Download our flyer, learn more, and apply now. For questions, contact STEMMattersNYC@schools.nyc.gov.

A Message from your Parent Coordinator, Niomi

Hello Ampark Families! This month’s family connection piece is going to fill your little one up with so much love and joy that it will be contagious! It’s hard not to beat yourself up after losing your temper with your child. If you find yourself feeling guilty and remorseful after losing your cool with your kids here are some things you should do:
  1. Forgive yourself.
  2. Apologize to your child.
  3. Challenge yourself to five good acts.

The Magic 5:1 Ratio concept helps build that parent-child relationship. When there are too many negative interactions with few positive exchanges in between that can create distance between you and your child. But if you want to close that gap, the 5:1 ratio can help. Keep in mind that the positive interaction must be something that the other person experiences as positive, not just something that seems positive to you. Take the time to observe your kids and learn what matters to them. Click here for some tools and tips!
