AmPark Owl Blog

Owl Blog Post for October 22nd

10/22/2021

AmPark goes PINK for breast cancer awareness, WITS Bits Snack Attack lessons on nutrition, pumpkin decorating for next week's Wonder Walk/Costume Parade/Pumpkin Blaze, and AmPark's new Lending Library!  Take a look at this wonderful week gone by...
Dear Families,

Thank you for joining us at Wednesday evening’s PA meeting or this morning’s PA recap at our first Virtual Family Tea of the year.

At the meetings we became more acquainted with new staff members Bob Reaven-Edlen, Teresa Mulvihill, and Dany Velazquez.  Supermom Audrey Routliffe also led us through a Brain Power icebreaker as our new Parent Wellness Ambassador.  We discussed the following happy highlights:
  • The lending library program has begun
  • AmPark was awarded a grant for 6 family sessions at the New York Historical Society in the spring
  • Assemblyman Dinowitz supported us in our advocacy to maintain a consistent work schedule and reopen our early childhood playground as soon as possible
  • Our students had WITS Bits this week and focused on looking closely at nutrition labels to make healthier choices
  • Our Wonder Walk costume parade has raised almost $800 and the donation page is still open for another month
  • We will continue our partnership with the Audubon Society in 2nd grade, as well as an afterschool 4th and 5th grade program in the spring
  • Our community is a vision in pink today in support of Real Kids Wear Pink and breast cancer awareness
  • AmPark Picture Days are coming up on November 16th & 17th; please look out for flyers in next week's Owl Blog!
We also clarified information regarding classroom closures:
  • School based administration (Kelly, Bonnie, and Dany) take the directives from the Situation Room set up by the DOE and the Department of Health.  We do not make the determinations as to whether a classroom closes or remains open when there is a positive case.
  • We have followed all policy and protocols set forth by the public health experts  since the beginning of the pandemic and will continue to do so.
  • While the DOE shared that classroom closures would be reduced, in an elementary school with unvaccinated students, if the students are unmasked in the same space they are considered close contacts.  Our students eat snack and breakfast in their classrooms which leads to close contact quarantining.  We are doing our best to mitigate spread by having lunch outside, as well as not combining classes in the lunchroom which could lead to further exposure and quarantine needs.
  • Students are now able to test out of quarantine and return to school on the 8th day, instead of the 10th day, if they have uploaded a negative PCR test after the 5th day of quarantine.  The letters shared with close contacts from the situation room outline these updates.  Please note that the date of exposure is Day 0 and the following day is Day 1.
  • We also ask that families please give consent in their child’s NYCSA for the random testing.

We understand that workplaces have been less accommodating over time and that having your child home is challenging.  We are still obligated to follow the recommendations of the situation room in the interest of our entire school community’s health and safety and thank you for your cooperation and understanding.

Tech Request Form
The school building is closed for Election Day on Tuesday, November 2nd.  K - 5 students will have asynchronous work shared by their teachers in the google classroom posted the day prior.  Attendance will be counted and your child’s teacher will share their method for tracking attendance on the 2nd.
K - 5 families, please work to troubleshoot your child’s access to the google classroom with your child’s teacher in advance of remote learning on November 2nd.  Staff members will be engaged in daylong professional development remotely and will not be able to be as supportive as they would typically be in day-of troubleshooting.  Tech requests must be received by the end of next week to have a device for election day.
It is a non-attendance day for PK students.

NYC Principals Conference
I have been asked to present at an upcoming Principals Conference for New York City principals.  The title of the workshop that I am co-leading with our superintendent and a fellow district 10 principal, Jean Dalton from P.S. 279 is titled Leading with Emotional Intelligence and Hope.  I would love to showcase members of our community and raise the voices of our families and students with their impressions of what emotional intelligence and hope has looked like throughout the pandemic.  If you are interested in participating, for which I am most grateful, please complete the padlet and/or flipgrid by Tuesday, October 26th.  Thank you in advance for your shares..

If you are interested in participating, I invite you to please jot down your thoughts or share a brief recording on this padlet:(camera and video can be accessed if you press the more option :)

Questions to consider in your response:
How did AmPark inspire hope in you during the pandemic?
What does emotional intelligence or social and emotional learning mean to you?
What tools have you been taught to manage difficult emotions?
How does social and emotional learning live in our school?

If you cannot log on with your child’s email, you are welcome to upload a 30 - 45 second video here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1_jfxu_H2zgDMINnK6UEYoyeIqy9RjBA0?usp=sharing

Let us know if you would like to purchase any items. We will also send home a paper flyer. Additionally, we will be selling swag from previous year’s at a recommended donation cash price of $10 for t-shirts and $15 for sweatshirts the morning of the Wonder Walk.

Parent Teacher Conferences
Your child’s teacher will reach out to you to schedule a virtual appointment for parent-teacher conferences.  Thursday, November 4th is a half-day for these conferences.  Your appointment will be in the afternoon or evening and teachers work to accommodate your preferences as best as they can.  If you cannot make your assigned appointment, please contact your child’s teacher to reschedule.

As in years past, this is a progress meeting to share how your child is doing at this point in the year and to plan ahead through the winter recess, as well as to have individual time with your child’s teacher.  Report cards will be available the first week in December in the NYCSA to provide students with adequate time to gain mastery of content.
