![]() Dear AmPark Families, It doesn’t seem possible that we’re already into November with the school year in full swing! Before we look to the month ahead, I want to thank everyone in our community for coming together for an extremely successful, albeit wet and rainy, March of Dimes/March for Babies Wonderwalk. It was so good to see so many of you and thank you for making it happen rain or shine! While we haven’t finalized the tallies just yet, it’s certainly looking like we’ve raised an impressive amount for the March of Dimes. Thank you for supporting your children in their efforts to raise money for premature babies and a cause that is so near to many of our hearts and families. This month’s Book of the Month is Hidden Figures: The True Story of Four Black Women and the Space Race by Margot Lee Shetterly. The story details the amazing lives of mathematicians Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson, Katherine Johnson, and Christine Darden, whom, at a time when being Black and a woman limited what they could do, made immeasurably important contributions to NASA and the USA winning the space race. These remarkable women embody Habit 2: Begin with the end in mind, as through their persistence and dedication to math and science, they truly changed the world. ![]() If you haven’t done so already, please send in any extra Halloween candy to be sent off to our Troops deployed overseas through Treats for Troops. There is a purple monster in the lobby waiting to happily (and hungrily) take your contributions to send over to our men and women in uniform. As we prepare to celebrate Veteran’s Day here at AmPark, we will proudly be supporting District 10’s Operation Gratitude initiative and writing letters of thanks to service members on active duty. The District goal is 10,000 letters by Thanksgiving and AmPark is happy to contribute. In keeping with the theme of both Veteran’s Day and Thanksgiving, we are excited to invite AmPark’s veteran family members in to share stories with our classes and speak with students about their service experience on Monday, November 25th. ![]() The Great American Spellcheck fundraiser is underway and we hope that many students will participate by getting sponsored for their spelling skills! The Spellcheck will take place in classrooms on November 15th. FREE New York Botanical Garden Holiday Train Show — Bronx Park, the Bronx Saturday, November 23 – Sunday, January 26, 2020 The NYBG's annual holiday train show is a must-see for tourists and locals alike. In fact, it's No. 39 on our list of 100 things to do with kids in NYC. More than 25 model trains go whizzing by approximately 150 NYC landmarks meticulously made out of acorns, twigs, bark, berries, and leaves. Afterward, kids can hit the Evergreen Express in the Everett Children's Adventure Garden to make train puppets, march in musical parades, and craft miniature scented sachets.
