Dear AmPark Families, Just as many of our integrated curricular units move from a focus on self, and our own community and school, to a broader sense of community and the world, this month’s Book of the Month: Hello Lighthouse by Sophie Blackall, is a poetic link to our own School District 10 Team as “Keepers of the Lighthouse”. The theme of this book also echoes the message of TLiM Habit 1: Be proactive, because the leader of the lighthouse must work first to ensure that the beacon of light is kept lit before all else. We are in the midst of Hispanic Heritage Month, which began on September 15th and will conclude October 15th. These dates are symbolic to coincide with the independence days of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Mexico. Hispanic heritage encompasses a rich history of Spanish-speaking countries, including Spain, Mexico and many nations in Central America and South America. To elevate this celebration we will engage in classroom celebrations on Friday, October 11th. As a school community that values students seeing themselves in their learning experiences here at AmPark, we have encouraged all staff, classrooms and spaces to identify at least one way that each of us can participate in this school wide celebration. We are grateful to the collaborative efforts of our amazing Kindergarten Team for igniting the spark on this celebration! At AmPark, we strive to teach students to be citizens of the world by engaging in local and larger service initiatives. One way to engage in service is to donate funds or goods to organizations. This month, students are invited to have their WonderWalk sponsored by collecting pledges to benefit the March of Dimes. The Wonderwalk will take place on October 31st to coincide with our Costume Parade. Students are also invited to limit their own sugar intake at Halloween while also showing care to service members by donating candy to Treats for Troops the week after Halloween. Finally, AmPark is so proud to once again partner with the Audubon Society and offer our students the Feathered Friends after school program! This year’s fall program begins on Wednesday, October 16th for our 3rd-5th graders. Please be on the lookout for permission slips that were backpacked home today!
