From the Principal: Dear Families, It was wonderful to see your children’s faces and hear them buzzing about their spring break adventures! It sounded like families made sure to spend time together sharpening the saw during the holiday weeks. We came back in well rested for the 3rd-5th grade math exams and were very proud of the perseverance the students showed. May 5th - 11th is Teacher Appreciation Week. It’s no secret that teaching is one tough gig illustrated by the fact that nearly 50% of teachers leave within their first five years. A little appreciation can go a long way in helping teachers to come to work feeling energized each day when their community recognizes efforts and works to build a collaborative network of support. Our teachers certainly feel the love here at AmPark from our parent body with the many happenings that take place across the week. Check out https://www.pta.org/home/events/PTA-Teacher-Appreciation-Week to learn more about ways to #thankateacher. We also celebrate family members as their children’s first and primary teachers! As you hopefully all know, we place a high value on the input of our families. To that end, we will be sending home a survey to aid in matriculation planning for the 2019-2020 school year. The survey will ask for your opinion on your child’s strengths and needs, as well as any relevant information for placement. While we cannot and do not guarantee specific requests can be honored, due to a variety of factors, your input will be considered. Please also be assured that all teachers and staff members take part in careful conversations and strategic decision-making around classroom assignments. The AmPark School-Wide Science Fair will be held on June 19th, 2019 from 8:45am - 10:45am! We have learned that unfortunately there is not going to be a city wide NYC Science Expo this year, so our Fair will be in school only. Each class will develop and share a class project. Every child is welcomed to create their own individual science fair project, should they so choose, and we will showcase their work in the multipurpose room. We welcome all families to come and join us for the Fair! Please also take a moment to take The Leader in Me Parent Survey here: TLiM Parent Survey Wellness in the Schools News: Our WITS chefs partnered with Blue Apron on April 30th to provide the students with a tasting of a veggie pasta salad. The recipe was such a hit that we saw more than a few students going back for seconds and thirds! Dinner and Dancing with WITS and Alvin Ailey on May 30th! Please join us for a free family event led by our Alvin Ailey dancers. There will also be samplings from our WITS chefs to keep our energy levels up. Our student Wellness Committee is planning fun activities to increase awareness around nutrition and exercise. Be on the lookout for more information! Classroom Updates: Have you heard about the work that Kindergarten has been doing to raise awareness around recycling and ocean clean-up? Our K students have become experts on strategies for helping sea life and preventing pollution. Check in with them and/or visit https://4ocean.com/products/4ocean-bracelet to learn more about this cause. Kindergarten will also be selling reusable AmPark water bottles in the coming weeks to reduce waste and raise funds for their cause. Classroom Shout Outs: Spirit Week ended with a door decorating contest with the winners decided on by a student panel. Take a look at some of the ways that classes decided to showcase their creativity. Book of the Month We’re All Wonders by R.J. Palacio is a book that follows the spirit of the original Wonder and is adapted for a younger audience. This story reminds readers to “Choose Kind” and recognize the beauty in differences.
