Dear Families, Our students had a wonderfully warm welcome back and we could not have done it without your support! This week we saw students explore their identity and share their name stories with one another, reconnect picnic style during outdoor lunches, participate in Brain Power brain breaks led by students, gallery walk demonstrate an impressive math memory of previously taught terms and apply them to new concepts, and so much more! Each day brought singing, dancing, movement, exploring, and joy! As a community, we were able to zoom in together to Josh broadcasting live from a classroom for our first schoolwide sing in 18 months. The students, teachers, and families have created magic with the synergy of this past week. Virtual Back-to-School Night - Thursday, September 23rd Due to the new vaccination mandates for visitors and in the interest of equity and access, our Back to School Night will be held virtually. While we would love to welcome everyone into our learning spaces, safety continues to be the number one priority and we have an evening planned that will provide plenty of time to learn more about the daily happenings from the teachers. Schedule: Zoom links will be sent to emails next Wednesday afternoon. Sessions A and B will be the same, but will also allow families with siblings to visit multiple classrooms, as well as the opportunity to visit both a homeroom and specialty area teacher. Session A: 4:30 - 4:45 Admin Welcome/Overview 4:45 - 5:30 Virtual Teacher Visits 5:30 - 5:55 Admin Q & A Session B: 6:00 - 6:15 Admin Welcome/Overview 6:15 - 7:00 Virtual Teacher Visits 7:00 - 7:30 Admin Q & A Important Reminders & Updates: Lunch/Recess: Thank you to the many who have been sending their children with their own seating for our outdoor lunch periods. COVID Testing Consent via NYC Student AccountsConcerned about COVID? There might be no more gentle way to have your child tested than by consenting to their random testing while at school. Here, friendly faces of trusted adults will oversee your child being tested by the technicians of SOMOS Labs. We make sure each child is cared for and attended to through the process and are grateful to you all who are willing to check on the health of our community overall by consenting to your child being tested. Please reach out to Bonnie if you have any additional questions or concerns about testing and consent. Arts Workshop for Students and FamiliesOjo - Visual Arts Workshop with Artist Esperanza Cortés
Online on Zoom Thursday, September 23, 2021 3:30-4:30 pm Ojo, which means "eye" in Spanish, is a project about sight or the act of seeing. The workshop asks the question, "What do you see?" Participants will create an eye-portrait and reflect upon what they have made, emphasizing the role of the imagination. The participants will write about their eye, and what it is seeing or interpreting. On some level our eye is a form of identity which defines us in a multitude of ways, through family, community, culture, nationality and our shared environment.
