Owl Blog Post for August 21st

Dear Families,

There has been so much buzzing these days about our return to school and I know our families are anxious for information as you are making difficult decisions.  Thank you for your understanding that everything we are beginning to share regarding schedules continues to be preliminary.  We will be sharing your child’s cohort information and specific days of the week by August 26th via email.  Many requests have been made regarding days and schedules.  Following receiving your schedule, if you have a request for a change due to the days and your childcare or work needs please indicate so using this survey.  With advance notice, we will likely be able to accommodate some requests that fall within our current model.  Scheduling our students given all of the requirements, parameters, needs, and requests has been no easy task.  If the day your child is scheduled causes stress because of your family's needs, please do reach out to me or Niomi.  We are doing our best to work with you and accommodate our families as best as we can.

The mayor has also announced that through the Learning Bridges Program, free childcare will be provided on remote days.  Interest can be indicated here: schools.nyc.gov/learningbridges. Roads to Success is working to be a part of this Learning Bridges grant to support child care on remote days.  More information will be shared as soon as plans have been finalized by the city.

While we anticipate beginning the year in Model 2 with three in-person cohorts due to staffing, space, and the numbers of in-person students, we will have the option to change models based on our in-person numbers for the second quarter.  If our numbers are greatly reduced, we may be able to accommodate two in-person cohorts which would increase your child’s days from 1 - 2 to 2 - 3 per week.  If this is possible, and as soon as it is possible, we will be sure to let you know.
Model 2 Details:
  • This model has a three-week cycle that will repeat. For each group there will be one consistent day of the week the student will attend in-person, with Monday and Tuesday rotating among groups. Students will participate in remote learning for non-in person days.
  • Students will receive in-person instruction 1-2 days per week for a total of 5 days every 3 weeks. Students will participate in remote learning for non-in person days.
  • Students whose families choose fully remote learning will receive remote instruction every day.

Due to a Department of Education change in the school day for both staff and students, the in-person AmPark school day will now start at 8:45 and dismissal will begin at 2:05.  Breakfast and lunch will be served in the classrooms.

In addition to next week’s Town Hall we are planning a virtual Meet and Greet event before school starts.  We will use this time to introduce the grade level teams and talk through what to expect in the first few days of school, as well as how to ensure your child is connected for the first day of school.  Be on the lookout for your invitation when we email our welcome back packets on the 28th.  Teacher assignments and additional supply list information will be included.

We are sending all of you our thanks for the support that you have shown our school community over the summer.  From donations to quick emails of encouragement to meditation guides, your care for our community is what has kept us going during these long days.  We look forward to seeing your faces virtually next week at our Town Hall and wish you a restful weekend.
Be well,
Kelly and Bonnie
